En 1873, Christian Schmidt y Heinrich Stoll fundaron \u00abMechanische Werkst\u00e4tte Schmidt &amp; Stoll\u00bb en Riedlingen para la producci\u00f3n de m\u00e1quinas de tejer, la cual se convirti\u00f3 en NSU Motorenwerke AG en el sitio actual de Audi en Neckarsulm. El nombre de NSU est\u00e1 estrechamente asociado con Neckarsulm, ya que el nombre de la empresa se deriva de la ciudad de los r\u00edos Neckar y Sulm. Ferdinand Porsche, un ingeniero de Bohemia, recibe el encargo de dise\u00f1ar el veh\u00edculo que se presenta como prototipo en 1934.
